The purpose of this group is to enable people to make contact with others in the group who have similar interests and who may wish to join up in smaller groups to go to the cinema, a round of golf, go for a coffee, go to the theatre or take the bus to Kendal for example. There is no limit to the activities that are better shared.

Moto is for small groups of two, three or four to meet up. The group will not meet as a whole but all membersc an invite others to join them in whatever they want to do. It is not a group for hiring coaches for trips out to theatres or other places of interest. There are already u3a groups which cater for this such as the Theatre Visits, Questers and Visiting Gardens groups which are very welcoming for people on their own.

We are currently setting up a Whatsapp group where members will be able to post messages and also respond to other members. For those who do not have a smartphone or do not wish to be in a Whatsapp group, notices can be posted on the group’s board at the monthly meetings and drop-ins. As this is a new type of group which is not run by a ‘leader’ we are not entirely sure how it will pan out in the future, but there is a lot of interest in the group and we are hopeful of success. The group is going to be renamed soon so watch this space. Anyone who has expressed interest in the group will be contacted shortly with details.

The new M.O.T.O. group [members on their own] got off to a great start with a meeting in the Rose Garden at Ulverston bus station on Tuesday 24th August. The sun shone and the mood was enthusiastic. Seventeen members turned up and much swapping of phone numbers went on. Two people, Sue Bartzsch and Marie Fairburn, agreed to be contacts for the Beacon system. The group consensus was that communication would be best by an email group where any member could post an idea for an outing or a meetup for coffee etc, and any member interested could reply directly to that person to make arrangements to meet.
